The first time I remember interacting with great grandmother was in 2009 as a little boy. Years later, I came back to Penang in the summer of 2017. When we visited I was able to speak Mandarin to her, and communicate that I was her great grandson. I’m not sure she was able to understand everything I said, but I saw a faint spark light up her eyes, and a warm smile tease at the corners of her mouth—we shared a beautiful moment together. When I left the house after that visit, I had no idea it would be my last time seeing her.
